Event Overview

5-round rated Swiss chess tournament on August 7-9, 2026. We offer 5 sections and a guaranteed prize fund over $6000. There will be 5 rounds in total with two schedules. Top two sections are FIDE rated. 30 Grand Prix points.

REGISTRATION AND FEES

·        $89 if received by Sunday 6/15/26 11:59pm CST – Extended to 6/20/26!

·        $109 from 6/16 through Sunday 8/2/26 11:59pm CST

·        $150 from Monday 8/3/26 through the start of the tournament. Any registrations for the 3-day schedule made after 5:45pm receive a 1st round bye. Any registrations for the 2-day schedule made after 8:30am, Saturday 8/8/26 receive a 1st round bye.

·        ALL Novice (U1000 section) rates will be $25 lower at checkout.  If you register for the Novice (U1000 section) and have to be moved, you will owe the $25 balance before playing round 1.  All withdrawal deadlines and service fees apply if the additional payment is not made.

·        Playing up ok for players within 100 points of the bottom of the section’s rating range, add $50 to entry fee.

Withdrawal with refund available if requested by 7pm on Wednesday 8/5/26.  After that time, no refunds. Any refunds will incur a $10 processing and transaction fee.

What to Bring and Know
Please bring a clock if you have one. We will provide all the chess sets this time. 
US Chess Membership is required. Please be responsible for your membership prior to the event to help the organizers and prevent delays.
Notation is required for everyone 4th grade and up. Notation sheets will be available if needed, but please bring a pencil or pen. Strongly encouraged to bring your own notation book/sheets. 
 
Additional Rules
Parents/guardians will not be allowed in the playing hall or hallway leading up to the playing hall while play is in process as this was too distracting at the last tournament. The Library strongly suggests only one adult attend per family to avoid overcrowding. Additionally, to make room for up to 120 kids to compete, there will not be enough chairs for the parents in the playing hall. Each player must also leave the playing hall after each round. Parents and players that are done with their game should stay at the main library building, but avoid crowding in front of the playing hall. A waiting room will be able to accommodate some. Only drinks allowed in the playing hall. Food must be consumed outside. 81st Texas State & Amateur Championship (In Memory of Luis Salinas)

Event Overview

The tournament features two main sections, one-day Novice and Scholastic sections, and a Blitz side event. All players in the Championship section must have a FIDE ID, and foreign players must disclose their FIDE ID prior to Round 1.

The Championship section will be FIDE-rated and played under FIDE rules. US Chess ratings and rules will be used for pairings and prize eligibility. The May 2026 US Chess rating supplement will be used. Texas Chess Association membership is required for all players, including those from out of state.

Championship: FIDE & US Chess rated, 7SS, G/90+30

Amateur: US Chess rated, 7SS, G/90+30

Scholastic (Saturday only): 5SS, G/25+10, K-12

Novice (Sunday only): 5SS, G/25+10, U1400

Eligibility

Championship: Open to players rated 2000 or above (US Chess regular or FIDE), or those who have previously held a 2000+ rating. National invitational representatives are allowed to play in the Championship.

Amateur: Open to players rated under 2000 and unrated players.

Scholastic: Open to K-12 players.

Novice: Open to all ages under 1400 US Chess rating.

Open to all US Chess and TCA members. Foreign titled players (GM, IM, WGM, WIM) do not need US Chess membership.

Players in the Championship and Amateur sections who fail to appear within 30 minutes of round start forfeit the game unless the Chief TD otherwise provides for good cause. In all other sections, a player forfeits the game only if their time expires on the clock before they arrive.

Blitz: Friday 5/22/2026 7:30pm Blitz 5 Round Double Swiss G/3+2 time control. This is USCF rated. The entry fee is $30 ($50 onsite). Registration closes 1 hour before round 1. Regular rating will be used if you don’t have a Blitz rating. 2 sections Championship 1600+ and Reserve U1600.

Notation required
Food and drinks are not allowed in the playing hall. Water is the only exception.
No electronic devices (except necessary medical equipment and clocks) in Championship and Amateur. Players in other sections may use electronic notation devices endorsed by US Chess.
Only players whose game is in progress, tournament directors and staff, TCA officers, and press are allowed in the hall during rounds.
Refunds available until May 15, 12:00pm, subject to a $25 fee.
Only Texas residents are eligible for state champion titles. Players requiring accommodations due to disability or religious reasons should contact the organizer as soon as possible, preferably at least two weeks before the tournament.

CANCELLATION & NO-SHOW POLICY

This slow swiss takes place over 4 weeks, with games on May 16th, 23rd, 30th, and June 6th. G/90 with 30 sec increment per move. 4 round Swiss. Sections dependent on turnout. EF: $20.00 all. Online registration and payment requested.

USCF membership must not expire before June 30, 2026.

Austin Chess Club is a wonderful atmosphere for the mature, experienced chess player. The event has the potential to run late. Scholastic players are welcome, but expected to play quiet, serious chess. One round may last upwards of 4 hours.

Last chance registration happens onsite 3:00-3:45pm on May 16th. No pre-registration for round 1 is necessary. Email pre-registration is accepted; however, online payment is preferred! If you email to register, you must show up and pay no later than 3:45pm! First round begins at 4pm. Please be on time! Participants who wish to enter the tournament late may email Austin Chess Club. Late entry must be made (emailed) before 10am on Saturday,  May 23rd to secure a round 2 pairing.
