76th Southwest Open Comes to a Close

Players from Austin and surrounding areas came out in force to help make the 76th Southwest Open a success!
Congratulations to the Southest Open Prize winners from the Austin area!!!!
The 76th Annual Southwest Open took place September 3 - 6, 2010 in Corpus Christi, Texas. 110 Players participated in the traditional events, and another 65 in the scholastic side event. Prizes in the Open, Reserve, and Novice sections paid out at 62%. A strong showing from UTD and UTB made for interesting pairings in the Open section! GM Ramirez (UTD) & IM Cornejo (UTB) shared 1st and 2nd with 5.5, and 3 players from UTD shared 3rd.
Congratulations to local players Alex Chua and Michael Langer for sharing the U2400 prize, each with 4.5 points.
Local players winning prizes in the Reserve section included Austin Jiang & Alok Kumar in a tie for 2nd & 3rd. Andrew Jacob brought home the top Class B award, while Duy Nguyen joined in a multi-way tie for 2nd place Class B. Rohith Kaliyur tied for 2nd place Class C.
In the Novice section, Nathaniel Li brought home the U1200 honors, and Louis Fernandes won the U1000 money.
All of our local chess enthusiasts played hard and should be proud of themselves! Congratulations!
